Program Mission

MS in Health informatics 

The mission of the M.S. H.I. program is to train specialized health informaticians who can assist healthcare providers and institutions in implementing technological innovations to enhance data acquisition and analysis, to improve patient care, manage healthcare costs and comply with both current and future federal and state healthcare regulations regarding health information management.

The M.S. in Health Informatics program’s goals are aligned with the following outcomes:

Outcome 1: Students in the program will develop a deep understanding of all facets of health information acquisition, storage and management. They will develop a high level of understanding of the complexities involved in developing and maintaining electronic health records and their utilization in modern healthcare delivery.

Outcome 2: Students in the program will develop advanced skills in the application of management information techniques to all aspects of healthcare with special emphasis on medical database design and implementation. They will develop skills in healthcare datamining that will be transformational in improving the efficiency and accuracy of healthcare delivery in various types of clinical institutions.

Outcome 3:
Students in the program will improve their managerial skills that focus on such topics as the development of resource allocation and maintenance models, recruitment of service personnel and training, budget development and appropriate hardware and software acquisitions.

Outcome 4:
Students in the program will develop a deep understanding of the ethical and legal aspects of health information acquisition, storage and management and understand how to fully comply with all relevant state and federal regulations and policies.

Outcome 5:
Students in the program will be able to retrieve, interpret and apply primary research within the field of health informatics and demonstrate a command of the relevant literature, databases and software applications and be able to utilize this information in their professional practice.

MSHI healthcare Analytics 

The mission of the M.S.H.I. Healthcare Analytics concentration is to train a cadre of individuals who are concerned with the analysis and utilization of large databases of healthcare-related information that are relevant to the continued expansion and development of diverse healthcare organizations.

The M.S.H.I. Healthcare Analytics concentration’s goals are aligned with the following program outcomes:

Outcome 1: Students in the concentration will develop a deep understanding of areas of medical and healthcare informatics which require greater knowledge than delivered in most information technology-based specialties. For example, these include the subject area of health data management, health data visualization, medical database mining and predictive analytics, health outcomes research and statistical analysis for healthcare analytics.

Outcome 2: Students in the program will develop advanced skills in the application of management information techniques to exploit the
opportunities presented by the “mining” and evaluation of emerging healthcare information resources in the healthcare sector.

Outcome 3: Students in the program will develop a deep understanding of the ethical and legal aspects of health information acquisition, storage and management and understand how to fully comply with all relevant state and federal regulations and policies.

Outcome 4: Students in the program will be able to retrieve, interpret and apply primary research within the field of health informatics and demonstrate a command of the relevant literature, databases and software applications and be able to utilize this information in their professional practice.
