HIMSS22: Why Should Students Attend?

HIMSS22 - Why Should Students Attend

Your network is your net worth, it’s said. For students, industry conferences are excellent opportunities to connect with colleagues and strengthen their position as professionals. This year’s annual conference for the Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society – called HIMSS22 – extends invaluable opportunities to students in healthcare IT, especially health informatics graduate programs.

Taking place in person in Orlando, Florida, from March 14 to 18, HIMS22 offers a robust itinerary.

Despite being smaller than previous years, HIMSS21 still drew over 18,000 registrations and over 8,000 exhibitors and vendors. Of them, 28% of attendees were C-suite executives – primarily CEOs, CIOs and VPs of IT.

If you are unable to attend in person, HIMSS22 also offers a digital conference. They’re offering over 30 hours of programming exclusive to the digital experience, ranging from live group dialogues and one-on-one talks to the exhibition of new innovations.

Value of Attending HIMSS22

Students can get a lot of value from attending HIMSS22. The most valuable topics, broadly, are networking events, career opportunities, career and HR insights, educational sessions and the exhibition of the latest innovations. We recommend that students attend the For Students Only: An Orientation and HIMSS 2022 State of Healthcare sessions to get the most out of the conference.

Networking Events

With the sheer number of people who are scheduled to attend HIMSS22, networking opportunities are nearly limitless. Attendees come from a variety of backgrounds and careers connected to healthcare, including:

  • Senior executives.
  • Cybersecurity professionals.
  • Data analysts.
  • Entrepreneurs and investors.
  • Healthcare consultants.
  • University faculty.

Some of the HIMSS22 networking events that we recommend – which may require additional registration or fees – include:

Career Opportunities

Graduating soon? Perhaps you’re looking to change roles soon? Two of the professional development opportunities at HIMSS22 are career fairs – one in person and one digital – for people seeking professional growth. There is no additional fee to attend these fairs, though there may be related events for an additional cost.

The in-person career fair features a portrait studio for taking professional headshots, 10-minute LinkedIn profile and resume review sessions, and educational sessions on leadership, emotional intelligence and building your personal brand. Employers scheduled to attend the in-person career fair include:

  • ConnectiveRX.
  • DSS Inc.
  • First Databank.
  • Harmony Health IT.
  • Guidehouse.
  • Olive.
  • Schellman Compliance, LLC.

Many of the in-person employers are also scheduled for the digital career fair, where you have the chance to attend one-on-one web chats with them. Employers exclusively attending digitally include:

  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
  • Kandu Health.
  • MITRE Corporation.
  • Tuba City Regional Health.
  • UW Health.
  • 3M.
